Abolish the Electoral College

This was my opinion before the 2000 election, by the way.

The Electoral College had a purpose, once. In the early years of the United States, communication and travel was slow and difficult. Campaigns for office on a national level were simply not possible. Under those circumstances, it's reasonable to extend the representative form of government to make a representative form of election. Joe Farmer elects the local political figure who most closely matches his views. That person then travels to his state capitol and chooses the candidate who most closely matches his views. It made sense, at the time.

However, in these days of instant communication and what would seem to be near-instant travel to the Founding Fathers, the Electoral College only serves to complicate the campaign strategy, give less populous states undue influence over the election, completely negate the vote of anyone living in a state which votes for his opponent, and allow a candidate to win office while receiving fewer overall votes than his opponent.

We have the technology to make a truly one person, one vote system in the United States. Do we have the wisdom to do so?
